  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Took a while to digest this one... : At first, I was unsure of what to make of what I was reading. At times, I was bored, and then at others, I was struck by the poetic genius of the writing. Sometimes I found the story just way too overwhelmingly farcical and ridiculous, but just before I realized I was deeply engrossed. So I struggled with my feelings when it came to rating this particular read. In summary, I would say this is not something I would choose to read again any time soon, but it certainly was worth the investment of short time it took for me to finish it. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kenya Starflight -- Quirky and over-the-top but still enjoyable satire : It's nice to know that dystopian literature was a thing before blockbusters like "Hunger Games" wore out the genre's welcome, heh... I haven't read anything else by G. K. Chesterton, and I'm not sure what prompted me to download this e-book (besides the fact that it popped up as a Kindle freebie at some point), but it was definitely an interesting read. And despite being written over a century ago, it's a satire that still holds some relevance today. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from David -- Thou hast made us for thyself : Hi, after reading the book I only fell on many tortuous explanation attempts written online. The key to understand the meaning of this story resides on the Saint Augustine sentence "Thou hast made us for thyself" aka "for your amusement". Life is truly understood by whom created it or, at a lesser level, at least took part to its creation. Of course this process of creation can be translated in many human-life combinations as for the privileged relation between a movie director and his main actor, who must believe in the story to act properly, etc. ... But still, this would remain only a partial interpretation. Here, this first book of the yet to come master of paradoxes, deserves all our attention. It shows the very early attempt of the author to write down his observations on faith among his siblings. The author genuinely grabs the signification of another picture from Saint Augustine: just imagine a street made following the 7 virtues (opposite to the 7 sins), which pretends to guide us to paradise, a very original street since it is traced in 7 right angles. This originality will truly compel the kids imagination who will imaginarily fight dragons to keep it. The grown-ups instead, will just take pictures. They will pass through it (life) as tourists where only a few will truly understand its majesty. A child's soul is needed to understand. Enjoy the reading! • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Pedro Campos -- Favourite passages : "We desire nothing better than that our wrongs and our glories should be widely known." ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 27, 2016 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from John Hopper -- amusing, but became a bit dull : A rather odd, but amusing novel set in a future London (1984, ironically, 80 years after the novel's publication), where democracy has given way to a cynical system whereby a random individual is chosen to be king for a period of time. The story is full of wry observations, reflecting the author's own views, but does get a bit dull and repetitive. Worth a look. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 26, 2015 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from L. Holloway -- Very interesting : A tragi-comedy. very philosophical and with wonderful characters and descriptions. Everyone should read G K chesterton. Discusses humman nature at a remarkably deep level but with laughs. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 22, 2014 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from jankent -- Dated : I found this a hard read. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 2, 2018 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Profoundly odd : I'd stick with Chesterton's other works (e.g. Orthodoxy, Father Brown, the club of queer trades) - he's a great writer, but this is far from his best. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 12, 2019 )

The discussion of prophetic literature with which Chesterton begins The Napoleon of Notting Hill is itself an accurate piece of prophecy.
